Kumihimo

Kumihimo is the ancient art of silk braiding. Whether it's silk, eyelash, ladder, perle cotton, or metallic, each yarn creates it's own luscious and unique braid. Students will learn the age old methods of dressing the marudai, but will break all molds as they weave and braid yarns and fibers that do not epitomize this art form! In addition, students will learn how to add inclusions to their braids. The objective of the class is to learn the artform, without obeying the constraints of tradiiton. Students are encouraged to bring old and broken jewelry pieces that might enjoy being braided or woven into a new artpiece. Buttons are welcome, as are other memorabilia that might be attached to strands and woven. Final pieces might include jewelry, fabric embellishments, hat bands, curtain tie-backs. For those truly breaking with tradition, plan on braiding your own jump rope! See you in class!!!
